Joe has experience supporting clients in a variety of settings, including community mental health, outpatient hospital, college/university, and private practice. He has worked with adults, adolescents, children, and families, providing both individual and group services.
Joe has particular experience and training in helping clients navigate relationship concerns, anxiety, identity development, trauma/traumatic stress, and boys' & men's issues. His therapeutic style is primarily informed by a psychodynamic, interpersonal approach. In therapy, he helps clients to identify their existing strengths and internal resources, supports them in clarifying — and at times, changing — personal patterns, and often draws from the potential of the therapeutic relationship to facilitate change. When indicated, Joe utilizes mindfulness- and skills-based interventions to support specific issues & focus areas. Joe believes that people are the primary experts on themselves, and he therefore values a collaborative approach to therapy that encourages self-efficacy and personal choice. He appreciates that healing and personal growth takes time, and aims to push clients toward their goals while respecting their pace.
